Flooring Measurement Guide: How to Measure

Measure room length and width at the longest points and multiply for square footage. For L-shaped rooms, divide into rectangles and add them together. Measure closets separately. For irregular rooms, use the grid method or digital tracing. Subtract fixed obstructions. Multiply by waste factor to get order quantity.

Basic Measurement Method

For rectangular rooms, measure the length and width at the widest points using a tape measure. Multiply length x width = square footage. Example: a 12 ft x 14 ft room = 168 sq ft. Measure in inches and convert to decimal feet for accuracy (e.g., 12 ft 6 inches = 12.5 ft). Record all measurements in a notebook or digital spreadsheet. Measure each dimension 3 times and use the average.

Irregular Room Measurement

For L-shaped rooms, divide the room into 2-3 rectangles at the interior corners, measure each rectangle separately, and add them together. For rooms with angled walls, measure the longest length and width enclosing the room, then subtract triangular cutouts (use base x height / 2). For circular or curved rooms, measure the diameter at the widest point and use πr². For complex rooms, use the grid method: draw the room to scale on graph paper, count the squares inside the perimeter, and convert using your scale factor.

Closets and Alcoves

Measure closets as separate rectangles. Measure the interior width and depth of the closet, multiply for square footage, and add to the main room total. Walk-in closets should be measured as separate rooms with their own waste factor calculation. For alcoves and bay windows, measure the full width and depth of the extended area and add to the main room. Deduct areas covered by built-in shelving or cabinetry if they will remain in place.

Digital Measurement Alternatives

Laser distance measurers ($30-$150) provide faster and more accurate measurements than tape measures, especially for large rooms. Laser measure: point at opposite wall, record distance, repeat for width. Smartphone apps (MagicPlan, RoomScan, Measures) use AR or LiDAR for automatic room dimensioning within 5-10% accuracy. For professional estimates, always verify digital measurements with a physical tape or laser measure on site. Never rely solely on blueprint dimensions — field-verify before ordering materials.
