Sheet, tile, and base

Rubber floor assemblies are not interchangeable

Worked sheet length

Shows why roll width matters more than a percent. Illustrative dimensions.

  1. Room 28 ft wide by 40 ft long. Specified roll width 6 ft.
  2. Runs across the width: 28 ÷ 6 = 4.67, so 5 runs. Each run is the 40 ft length plus end cuts the layout needs.
  3. Five runs × 40 ft = 200 linear feet of roll before end-cut allowance. At 6 ft wide, that is 1,200 sq ft against a net room of 1,120 sq ft.
  4. The difference is the unusable strip in the last run, which a flat 5% allowance (56 sq ft) would have missed.

“Rubber flooring” on a finish schedule can mean interlocking gym tile, glue-down tile, or a sheet that is heat-welded and coved. Each one has its own accessory list. The area is the easy number.

Sheet versus tile

Sheet rubber is planned from the roll width, with seams and, when specified, heat welding rod. Tile rubber is planned from the module and the adhesive. Do not convert a sheet specification into tiles because the area is the same.

Cove and base

Healthcare and some lab specs call for an integral cove or a rubber base. Measure the length of wall to receive it, deduct openings the spec says to deduct, and keep inside and outside corners as piece counts when the base system uses them.

Underlayment only when specified

Impact sound mats and leveling are included when the documents require them. A rubber surface is not proof that an acoustic mat is in the contract.

Questions this page answers

Should welding rod be in the floor area?

No. Estimate it from the seam length the roll layout creates, using the coverage the rod manufacturer publishes for that product.

Can kitchen rubber and gym rubber share a line?

Not if the thickness, finish, or seam method differ. Split them by specification section and room.
