Carpet broadloom: 5-15% depending on room-to-roll-width ratio. Maximizing 12 ft rolls with 10x12 ft rooms achieves 5% waste. LVP/LVT: 5-15% with 5-10% for straight layouts, 10-15% for diagonal or herringbone. Hardwood: 5-15% with 15% for premium patterns. Tile: 5-20% with ceramic at 5-10% and large format averaging 15-20%. Sheet vinyl: 5-15% limited by 12 ft roll width. Engineered hardwood: 5-12% lower than solid hardwood due to manufacturing consistency.
How Room Shape Affects Waste
Rectangular rooms produce the least waste. L-shaped rooms add 3-5% extra waste. Rooms with multiple angles, curved walls, or bay windows add 5-10% extra. Rooms with many corners and cutouts (e.g., kitchens with islands, bathrooms with fixtures) add 3-8% extra. For every 10 ft of irregular perimeter over 100 sq ft, add 2% waste. Circular rooms require 20-25% waste for most materials.
Installation Pattern Impact
Straight lay (planks/tiles aligned with walls): base waste + 0%. Diagonal (45-degree angle to walls): base waste + 5%. Herringbone/Basketweave: base waste + 8-10%. Versailles pattern: base waste + 10-15%. Running bond (brick pattern): base waste + 2-3% for tile. Pattern matching large repeats (carpet with medallions): base waste + 10-15%.
