Concrete slabs

Which moisture test the floor specification is asking for

A pin meter, a plastic-sheet observation, a calcium-chloride kit, and an in-situ relative-humidity probe are not interchangeable results. The product instructions name the test. The estimate should not pretend a different test satisfied them.

  1. Read the test the product names

ASTM F2170 is the in-situ relative-humidity method. ASTM F1869 is the calcium-chloride method. ASTM F710 is a preparation standard for concrete floors under resilient flooring, not a pass/fail moisture number. Use the edition and the limit printed in the product instructions. Those limits differ by product, so this page does not publish one “safe” percentage.

  2. A test has a quantity of its own

Probes and kits are placed at a frequency the standard or the specification describes. Estimating “moisture testing” as a lump sum without the count of tests hides the scope. If testing is by the owner’s inspector, exclude it and say so.

  3. Mitigation is not the test

A failed or over-limit reading may lead to a mitigation system. That system has its own coverage rate and is not included because a test was mentioned. Do not add a mitigation coat “to be safe” without a specified product.

Worked scope note, not a test result

Shows how to write the assumption. It is not a moisture reading.

  1. Specification says resilient flooring adhesive must meet the limit in the adhesive instructions, tested by the method those instructions name.
  2. Takeoff assumption: test frequency and who pays for it are excluded until the division 01 or the flooring section assigns them.
  3. No mitigation quantity is carried.
  4. If a later addendum specifies a named mitigation product, add that product’s coverage calculation and delete the exclusion.

Questions this page answers

Can a surface meter clear a slab for glue-down flooring?

Only if the product instructions accept that meter. Many adhesives require a quantitative method named in their data sheet. A comparative scan can still be useful for finding wet areas to retest.

Do you publish a maximum relative humidity?

No. Publishing one number would invent a limit the specified product may not use. Copy the limit from the current product data sheet onto the estimate.

Ask for moisture scope to be included or excluded in writing

Send the current drawings, finish schedule, and the quantity format you need. The quote confirms fee, delivery date, and exclusions.
