Plank packaging

Luxury vinyl plank quantity takeoff

An LVP quantity is a packaging problem after it is an area problem. Net square footage is only the first line. The order is whole cartons, and the trims are linear pieces that a square-foot waste percentage never buys.

  1. Separate each plank product

Finish codes that share a color name can still have different plank sizes and stated carton coverage. Measure each code by room or zone. Do not add a glue-down plank and a floating plank into one area and split them later.

  2. Apply one documented allowance

This site’s planning band for LVP is 5–10%, depending on layout. Pick the figure that matches the pattern and room shape, write it on the quantity sheet, and do not add a second percentage “just in case.” The extra coverage from rounding cartons is already extra material.

  3. Count trims as pieces, not area

Reducers, end caps, stair nosings, and T-moldings follow the doorway and stair schedule. Record linear feet, then convert to the manufacturer’s piece length. A 7% area allowance does not produce a stair nosing.

Worked carton count

This is arithmetic on an illustrative allowance, not a quote and not a required waste factor.

  1. Net measured area for one finish code: 1,860 sq ft.
  2. Illustrative layout allowance of 8% (inside the 5–10% planning band): ordering area = 1,860 × 1.08 = 2,008.8 sq ft.
  3. If that product’s carton states 28 sq ft of coverage: cartons = 2,008.8 ÷ 28 = 71.74, which rounds up to 72 cartons.
  4. Show 72 × 28 = 2,016 sq ft ordered, so the carton rounding is visible and is not wasted a second time.

Questions this page answers

Does a waterproof plank remove the moisture line from the estimate?

No. Waterproof wear surface does not tell you whether the slab needs moisture control or leveling. Those are separate scope lines, included only when the documents or a site reading require them.

Where do stair planks go?

On their own line, with the stair count and the nosing profile. Stair pieces are often a different SKU from the field carton.
